Sophie, Worth the Price?

IMG_20160829_131219Before the birth of my first child I did all the typical first time mom things, including building my dream baby shower registry. In all my “research” Sophie kept popping up in my news feed as the must-have for all teething babies. I like to think of myself as a pretty frugal person and didn’t think there was anything that magical about a french giraffe. Ultimately I decided that I was too poor to buy it myself, stuck it on my registry and forgot about Vulli Sophie la Girafe.

Fast forward five months and my early Christmas present was well, and early teether (yaaayy…). Poor kid. Lucky me my mother-in-law also gave me an early Christmas present! You guessed it, meet Sophie.

Is Sophie really worth the price?

This was one of those items that I wouldn’t have bought for myself because it seemed a little ridiculous. However, eight teeth later I am so glad my mother-in-law gifted it to us. I don’t know why but during those early months (about 4-10 months old) it was a by far his favorite teething toy. We tried teething rings, fancy gel cooling toys, wet wash clothes, but he still loved Sophie best. Maybe it does have some magical qualities. So for us, it was a life saver. If it helps distract my cranky teething baby, worth it. Keep reading to see my favorite budget friendly pick below.

*Note: Be sure to buy the original Sophie. There are a lot of knockoffs out there and you want to be sure you are getting the original non-toxic product. Check out the prices on Amazon, but I would also suggest looking at your local Babies R Us, occasionally you can find them on sale.

A More Budget Friendly Option:

For those mommas reading who want a more budget friendly option I would highly recommend the Baby Banana, usually it’s about half the price. We have both the Baby Banana and Sophie and both have held up really well.  This is another one that counterfeiters like, so follow the link below to purchase the original one:

To Sum it Up:

Here is my official stance on Sophie: she is an awesome gift for a mom who is saving up for a new baby. If you are looking for a great gift to bring mom at the baby shower, after baby is born, or as a Christmas present this is a great option. If you are a momma who is debating whether or not to spend the cash, put in on your registry, mention it to Grandma, or wait and watch the prices. Or you can always check out my favorite budget friendly option as mentioned above!
